Gustav Becker 8 Day Regulator Time & Strike
- Description:
-
This clock is in the process of being restored. I have attached "before" photos below, and as work progresses I will update this entry with "after" photos.
The clock was in very neglected condition when received. The case was filthy, and had several areas of bad veneer, most notably on the upper door, which was in pieces. The carcase has its original wall stabilisers, lower finials, and side glasses. It will need veneer repair, as well as a new headpiece and rosettes (on the door).
The two-piece porcelain dial is in remarkably good condition, with only a very faint hairline between 7:00 and 8:00. Unfortunately, the dial pan was missing three of its four mounting posts, so these will have to be fabricated to match the holes in the front plate.
The case will obviously need a good cleaning and waxing; I am going to try not to refinish the wood.
The clock's bim-bam movement was badly rusted and very dirty. It was missing the suspension spring and pendulum, and both of the mainsprings were rusty and broken. The end was broken off the snail pillar where someone had tried to force a taper pin. To make matters worse, some Bozo had soldered the crutch hub to the pallet arbor, and had splashed solder all over place in the process. This mess was cleaned up, and the crutch readjusted to the pallet arbor. The missing and broken items will all be replaced.
