A. Schweighofer AltDeutsch 2 Weight Regulator, Time & Strike
- Description:
-
This was a work in progress, and the photos below are "before" and "after" shots of the clock as work progressed.
This clock is a "marriage" between a very finely made Austrian movement made in Baden, Austria in the 1870s, and a very nicely made Austrian case, probably made in the 1880s.
The clock had been ignored for a long time, and as you can see from the photos, was badly in need of some TLC, both mechanically and aesthetically.
Restoration of the 2 weight movement is finished; everything has been disassembled, polished, (screws)re-blued, reassembled, and oiled. New gut weight lines have been added.
The 2-piece porcelain dial was in remarkably good shape considering the condition of the rest of the clock. It was completely disassembled, cleaned, and the screws were re-blued.
The chapter ring and bezel were polished and gold plated.
As noted above, this clock is a "marriage;" the original movement was brass bracket-mounted to the backboard. Somewhere along the way someone changed to a corbel-mounted movement (sliding wood brackets). He obviously wasn't a woodworker; the mounting holes for the corbels were very poorly cut, and were too far apart to fit the wooden seatboard for the movement. They had to be re-cut, and the corbels made thicker and wider to accomodate the seatboard. The mahogany case needed a new molding on top, and also needed a new headpiece. The top of the door had a crack due to shrinkage; this is very usual with old veneer, and has been repaired. The top moulding was half missing and dry-rotted; it has now been replaced with a new piece of solid mahogany, the glasses were missing, and have been replaced, the missing headpiece has been replaced, as well as the finials.
New weights and pulleys have now been installed, and new gut weight lines.
The case is shown in both its unrestored and fully-restored state; thus the "work in progress" no longer applies.
