Ross Triple Fusee Mantle Clock
- Description:
-
THIS CLOCK WAS A RESTORATION PROJECT FOR A CLIENT, AND IS NOT FOR SALE.
This clock, which was made in Exeter during the mid-1800s, and was purchased in London during the 1960s, had a sound but dirty movement, and a case in need of cleaning and some reconstruction.
As can be seen from the accompanying photos, the movement and case were quite dirty. The movement was badly corroded, the oils had hardened, and the chime mechanism was completely out of synchronization.
The movement was completely disassembled and cleaned, all the pivots were polished, and all components were polished to a high lustre. Additionally, all the movement screws were polished.
The (3) fusee springs were removed from their barrels, cleaned, and re-oiled. The (3) original fusee chains were cleaned and soaked in oil for 24 hours.
The movement was reassembled, tested, and adjusted.
The clock's wooden case was polished and waxed, and a broken molding piece below the crossed horns was replaced. The front and rear bezels were polished and gold plated, as was the dial.
The result was a beautiful clock, correctly restored to its former glory.
