Suchy & Sohne 30 Hour Grand Sonnerie

Description:

This little 30 hour Bedermeier clock was probably made in about 1866 (serial number 3155). Karl Suchy was a clockmaker to the royal court in Vienna, and was one of the "majors" in Austrian clockmaking. The logo on the back of the mechanism carries the double-headed eagle Kaiser's Crest.

This clock has a beautiful pie-crust bezel, steel pendulum rod, and heavy brass pendulum bob (lead back). All serialised parts carry the same serial number, so everything is "proper."

The clock has been completely cleaned, polished, and adjusted. All brass parts have been polished and gold plated, and all the screws have been polished and blued.

The clock strikes on two coiled Miller gongs, and everything is mounted on a wooden seatboard.

The porcelain dial and hands are original; the dial has several very minor hairlines. The headpiece is a newly carved replacement, and the tailpiece is missing. The first quarter lobe on the chime cam has worn over the last 150 years, causing the rack tail sometimes to fall a tad too far, and the clock occasionally chimes twice on the first quarter (the three other quarters chime properly).

Caveats:

Several hairline cracks in the porcelain dial.

The headpiece is a replacement.

The clock occasionally chimes twice on the first quarter.
