Henry C. Smith 8 Day Pillar & Scroll, Time & Strike

Description:

Henry C. Smith was not a clockmaker; he bought cases and movements from others, and put everything together to make "his" clocks.

This clock dates from around 1850. It has a very nice mahogany case, and an Ingraham 8 day brass movement with a count wheel strike.

The case is close to perfect. The right hand scroll has been repaired, but very nicely. The apron and legs are original, and intact. The wooden finials are correct, but perhaps not original to the clock. There is a partial "Henry C. Smith" label on the back (apparently Mr. Smith used the same label for all his clocks, as this label refers to a weight-driven movement).

The 8 day Ingraham movement is in very good condition, and was completely overhauled in January, 2009. It keeps very good time. The pendulum bob is a replacement.

The clock strikes on a backboard-mounted bell. The hour strike is controlled by a count wheel, and the clock has a "passing strike" on the half hour.

The wooden dial may not be original; it is old, from the same period, and very nice. The hands are correct, and probably original.

The glasses are original; the tablet has been re-painted in place.

All in all, this is a very nice 150 year-old clock, in very good running order, and with very nice "curb appeal."

Caveats:

Right hand scroll has been repaired.

Dial may not be original.

Tablet has been re-painted.

The pendulum bob is a replacement.
