Unsigned 8 Day Bedermeier, Time Only
- Description:
-
This finely-made clock was originally estimated to be from around 1860, but when I had it apart for cleaning and polishing I found a signature on the dial plate indicating that the clock was actually made in 1832. I have noted this clock as "unsigned" because the signature is very faint, and done in the florid style of the times, which is sometimes unreadable to the modern eye; thus, the "unsigned" designation.
The movement of this clock is representative of the absolute precision that the Vienna clockmakers were so famous for. The gears are finely cut, and the pivots tiny and in perfect condition. Only such a finely made clock could run with the small single weight which powers the movement.
After cleaning this movement I polished the plates and gold plated them, so the clock will remain a shining example of how craftsmen used to make clocks.
The 2-piece porcelain dial is perfect, and is backed by a brass dial pan, which has also been polished and plated. The piecrust bezel is beautiful, and also has a gold finish. The hands are original, and retain their beautiful blueing.
The case is in excellent condition, with virtually no nicks or scrapes. The backboard is finely-figured solid walnut, which has gained even more character as it has aged. The glasses are new, but wavy. The pendulum is an old replacement, with a zinc back. The wood rod is also a replacement. The wall stabilizers are not original, but probably very similar to the original pieces. The finely-carved headpiece, tailpiece, and all finials appear to be original to the clock. The case is trimmed with a gesso highlight on the upper and lower door areas, and around the case platform.
All the brass in this clock has been polished and gold-plated, including the piecrust bezel, the chapter ring, the dial pan, the movement, the weight, stabilizers and the pendulum bob. All the screws have been polished and re-blued. The clock has a new gut weight line.
This clock is a wonderful example of old world craftsmanship.
